A Renewed Focus for the New Year

Many people see the New Year as a fresh start a time to refocus and reset their goals. But what they might not realize is that it’s impossible to find contentment apart from God. No matter how much money they make, how many possessions they have, or how prominent they might be in the eyes of the world, real joy will always elude them unless they know Him.

The hunger we feel in our hearts the desire that drives us to find contentment is a gift from the Lord, and only He can satisfy it. After all, the Father created us in His image so we could experience intimate personal fellowship with Him. Yet, even though we understand why it’s impossible for us, as believers, ever to be alone, we can also feel abandoned and empty when we lose sight of who Christ is and who we are because of Him (John 14:20-21).

If you’re like me, you travel on the same roads each day. After a while, we might not see the flowers growing nearby or enjoy the majestic beauty of a sunrise because we’ve looked at them so often. It’s like that with our spiritual lives as well.

We get caught up in circumstances and forget how to recognize our heavenly Father’s hand in our life. When that happens, we lose our sense of His presence, and our joy and fulfillment disappear as well. We might try substituting things of the world, but nothing can do for us what God can. Nothing and no one can help us like God. Nothing and no one can undergird, encourage, comfort, strengthen, or give peace and contentment the way He does, because His “lovingkindness is better than life” (Psalm 63:3).

It is my prayer that you will renew your focus on the Almighty, to see Him afresh this 2013. It is my prayer that you will gain a new perspective on your eternal and matchless Companion or come to truly know Him for the first time. No matter what this year has in store, enter it accompanied by the One who will never leave your side.
