A Worthy Leader

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes, and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work”. – 2 Timothy 2:20-21

Leadership is a high calling, and in today’s passage we see that along with position and authority come great demands on those who hold those positions and provide leadership for others.

First of all, the Lord speaks to the character of the leaders. They shall not defile themselves, being chief men among their people. They shall be holy and not profane the name of their God. They must lead by example–in their personal lives, in their marriages, and in their work. They must draw nearer to God in their devotion; they must have a deep knowledge of the meaning of certain rituals in their religion; and they must keep a great distance from everything that would defile.

Second, they must never get involved in anything that would hinder their availability to help the people in their walk with God. Leadership requires a certain temperament–a steadiness in times of turmoil, a calmness under pressure. Their faith and confidence in the Word of God must be so clear and deep that it could be observed by everyone.

Does God have a leadership role for you? Let me encourage you to accept the challenge to discover what it is, and say to the Lord, “Help me to be the kind of person who can lead others along Your path of life.”

Lord, keep me from making personal choices that hinder my testimony before others. Amen.

To Ponder

Spiritual leadership of others requires humility, constant prayer, and a daily decision to follow Christ.
