God’s Army

Today’s Scripture: 2 Kings 6:8-23
Read it online at the Bible Gateway: (NIV) (NASB) (KJV) (The Message)

Don’t be afraid… Those who are with us are more than those who are with them. – 2 Kings 6:16

Most nations of the world have some sort of standing army–men and women whose sworn duty it is to defend the land against enemies. They stand ready to carry out the orders of the commander in chief.

The kingdom of God also has a commander in chief, and a huge standing army as well. God is the commander. He is called the Lord of hosts, and He has at His command a host of angels standing ready in battle array to carry out His orders. Angels are more than messengers of God, they are also the army of God, committed to win the battles of God.

Frankly, I find great comfort in that picture of heaven with the host of angels surrounding the throne and sworn to instant obedience to the will of God. Why comfort? Because this army is charged with the mission of protecting you and me.

In addition to the feeling of comfort, there’s also a sense of challenge. This heavenly host of the army of God should find its reflection in the church of Jesus Christ here on earth. The heavenly picture is surely given as a model for us to stand ready to fulfill the slightest wish of our great commander in chief, as He leads us to victory over the forces of Satan.

Friend, you and I are not left on this earth to fritter away our days, drifting from church to church and meeting to meeting. Like the angels of God, we are called upon to join ranks with the faithful and carry out the commission of the captain of our souls–to reveal the light of the gospel to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. We’re all in the Lord’s army!

Prayer

Lord, help me to stand battle-ready against Satan and his forces, having put on the full armor of God. Amen.

To Ponder

According to the list of the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10-18, are you missing any of your battle gear?
