Good News for Bad People

Today’s Scripture: Hosea 1-3
Read it online at the Bible Gateway: (NIV) (NASB) (KJV) (The Message)

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. – 2 Corinthians 8:9

One night I was playing a game of Scrabble when the phone rang. The man on the other end of the line had called to talk to me about life after death. He was afraid he wasn’t going to heaven. When I told him the only way to heaven was through faith in Jesus Christ, he said, “Yes, I’ve heard that, but I’m afraid I’ve done so much bad in my life that God won’t forgive me.”

Many people feel this way. But the amazing thing about the Bible’s good news of salvation is how much God loves sinners. Romans 5:6 says, “Christ died for the ungodly.” Jesus said that He did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. That’s the message we find in Hosea 2:23: “I will say to those called ‘Not my people,’ ‘You are my people’; and they will say, ‘You are my God.'”

The grace of God extends to everyone who turns to the Lord in repentance and faith. Listen to Jesus’ words in John 5:24: “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.”

Throughout the Bible, God tells us that no one is too bad to come to Him. No one is beyond the reach of God’s grace, mercy, and love.

Lord, I praise You that Your Word says “where sin increased, grace increased all the more,” and now You look at me with eyes of love because of Jesus Christ’s atoning death on the cross. Amen.

To Ponder

Nothing in your past is a barrier to the grace and mercy of God.
