Recognize and Rejoice

“May the glory of the LORD endure forever; May the LORD rejoice in His works.” Psalms 104:31 (NKJV)

Psalm 104 is a celebration of God’s role as the Creator. It retells His amazing accomplishments in bringing about the natural order that we see around us. The clouds, the waves of the sea, the mountains, the various animals that fill the earth…it’s all seen as something to be celebrated and something that He celebrates.

Yes, it’s true that God’s creation has been scarred by sin and will eventually be restored to a state of perfection. But in the meantime, God hasn’t taken a step backwards, folded His arms and turned a cold shoulder on His handiwork. Not at all, in fact this celebratory Psalm comes to a crescendo as it sees the Lord rejoicing in His works.

That’s an important point: It’s one thing to understand God made everything, but quite another to recognize He actively derives great enjoyment from it. Nature is not a neutral topic for God; He interactively celebrates it. Why, because ultimately the natural world is a glorious reflection of His creativity, His imagination, His incomparable genius. Nature is something God rejoices in, and so should we.

When you see how salmon swim 3,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean in order to spawn in the exact place where they first hatched…celebrate that, because God does! When you see an octopus figuring out how to unscrew the lid of a glass jar just by watching another octopus do it…celebrate that, because God does! And when you see how the water cycle works like clockwork year in and year out to sustain life on earth…celebrate that, because God does!

Glorious Creator, help us to recognize Your handiwork as we look out a window, watch a nature program, or gaze into the sky…and may we rejoice along with You in it!
