Responding to the Word

“Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end.” – Psalm 119:33

Jesus always spoke to the people of His day in terms they could clearly understand. So when He spoke of the different ways people respond to the Word of God, He told the story of sowing seeds in a “field.”

In Mark 4:14, Jesus said the sower sows the Word in people’s hearts. Some hearts are as hard as an interstate highway, and the seed finds no home at all. Other hearts are fertile ground in which the seed germinates and produces as much as a hundred times what was planted. In between is a group of great interest to me. Mark 4:18-19 says, “Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.”

One man I ministered with was an outstanding evangelist and Bible teacher. But occasionally he would startle me with some reference to wanting a life of luxury and ease. One day those thoughts took over, and now he has all the material things his heart desired, but he’s miserable, as well as unfruitful in the cause of Christ.

Christian, I urge you to pray over this parable and ask God to keep the thorns cleared out of your life, so that you might remain fruitful for Him.

Lord, please show me if there are any thorns in my life, sapping my spiritual vigor. Amen.

To Ponder

Even the most growing, fruitful Christian must occasionally spray for weeds.
