To the Ends of the Earth

May the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised!” – -Deuteronomy 1:11

Did you know that the Great Commission appears in the Old Testament? Notice the words of Isaiah 49:6: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”

This passage speaks of Jesus Christ. His objective is to bring God’s salvation to the ends of the earth. And Christ made that possible by His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. It was the risen, triumphant Christ who commanded His disciples to “Go and make disciples of all nations.”

Let me tell you about a lady named Mrs. Nellie Myrick. She was living in an old soldier’s home in the middle of Iowa. It was a pretty gloomy place. But in her room, what a different story! The day my friend and I visited her, she was cutting pictures from Christmas cards to send to missionaries, who would use them in telling the story of Jesus to children. Every picture went out with her prayers.

We discovered that her radio was broken, and she couldn’t listen to the Christian radio programs that gave prayer requests for missionaries. We took the radio and got it fixed, and she again was able to hear her programs and pray for the specific requests she heard.

Now here was a lady in very limited circumstances who was serious about the Great Commission. She was doing what she could, where she was, with all her heart. I wonder what would happen in the world today if more of us did the same.

Prayer

Lord, infuse my heart with a desire to do whatever I can to turn people to Your light. Amen.

To Ponder

In the hand of God, our resources and abilities are multiplied for His kingdom.
