Trusting God

“Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4

Psalm 118:8 is the middle verse in the Bible. There are 31,174 verses in all, and this verse is number 15,587. It will probably come as no surprise to many of you that it has a powerful message. It says, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”

This same theme is stated in Jeremiah 17:5-6: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord.” The prophet here is talking about the person who thinks man is more reliable and has greater wisdom, greater power, and greater compassion in dealing with his problems than God.

What is the outcome of such thinking? Where will it lead? What will the person’s life be like who thinks that way? Here’s what the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:6: “He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.”

By way of contrast, the next verses say, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord… He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream… Its leaves are always green and it never fails to bear fruit” (17:7-8).

Christian, would you rather be like a scrawny bush in a desert wasteland or a bountiful, fruitful tree beside a stream? The difference depends on where you put your trust–in yourself or in God.

Lord, I confess it’s often easier to trust what I can control than what I cannot. Help me to see more clearly that only You can satisfy my heart’s desires.

To Ponder

“Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).
