Words of Life

“A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar pays attention to a malicious tongue.” – Proverbs 17:4

A few years ago, my friend Walt Henrichsen and I visited several colleges in Colorado and Wyoming, giving lectures on the Christian faith.

One night, a student rose to his feet and said, “I suppose you guys actually believe the Bible is a supernatural book, the Word of God.”

I smiled and said, “Yes, we do.”

“Then you are fools!” he shouted, and stomped out of the room. That sort of livened up the discussion, and we had a great evening with that large group of young men and women. By the end of the meeting, many of them gave their lives to Christ.

During the next few days, the young student’s words rang in my ears, troubling me. As I read my Bible I came to the story of the resurrection and Jesus’ words in Luke 24:25: “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!” His words brought things back into perspective. Would I rather be called a fool by a college sophomore or by Jesus Christ?

You and I can choose whose judgment we value and whose teachings we will follow. There are a number of modern philosophers, theologians even, who deny the inspiration and authority of Scripture. But Jesus said we should believe all that the prophets have written. Jesus is never wrong, and we can trust Him and His word as the final authority in our life of daily discipleship.

Prayer

Lord, when I’m tempted to follow a voice other than Yours, remind me that “the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom.” Amen.

To Ponder

Jesus said His sheep know His voice, and they won’t follow any other.
